Latitude 53 Board Member Call
Apply by October 1, 2025
Who We Are
Founded in 1973 by a collective of Edmonton artists, Latitude 53 is one of Canada’s oldest artist-run centres dedicated to supporting artists. Today, Latitude 53 is one of the largest and oldest centres in the Canadian Prairies, and it serves as a major centre for contemporary art in Northern Alberta. Latitude 53 is currently located on the ground floor of the McLeod Building in downtown amiskwacîwâskahikan at 10130 100 Street, just steps from where the gallery first opened fifty years ago.
Who We’re Looking For
As we approach our AGM in November 2025, we’re seeking to fill 3+ board positions as well as committee support roles. Our centre is looking for a broad range of candidates who meet any of the following requirements:
Identify as an artist in a broad sense;
Have strong ties to Edmonton’s arts community, or are eager to build them;
Are interested in governance, advocacy, and organizational strategy;
Bring skills in finance, fundraising, policy, or community engagement;
Specifically searching for a Treasurer that brings financial skillsets to the board, who would mentor under the existing Treasurer for one year to support the transition
Are first-time board members, or looking to gain board leadership skills;
Are experienced board members interested in lending their capacity to develop younger leaders.
Why Join the Board?
Some reasons you may consider a board position at Latitude 53 include:
Shaping the future of contemporary art and an artist-run centre in Edmonton;
Receive a free L53 Membership, which includes membership perks alongside access to events, gallery shows, and performances;
Gain governance and leadership experience in a supportive environment;
Collaborate with a network of artists, curators, arts professionals, and their supporters.
Time Commitment & Expectations
Board member positions are a 3-year term with an optional renewal (for a total of 6 years). Board Chair(s) positions have an additional 1-year advisory position to support board transition.
Board meetings are typically virtual every second month.
There are currently three board committees that support Latitude 53. These include:
Executive Committee - Made up of the Co-Chairs, Treasurer, and Chairs of sub-committees. This group supports leadership conversations with the Co-EDs and agenda planning for board meetings.
Fundraising & Advocacy Committee - Made up of some board members, some staff, and some volunteer community members. This committee supports the planning and development of fundraising and community events to support financial sustainability and relationality with the community.
Policy & Strategy Committee - Made up of some current and past board members, this committee supports the development and reporting against the Board Strategic Plan and maintenance of organizational policies and bylaws supporting organizational accountability.
Board members are asked to have attendance at key events, including gallery show openings, the Annual General Meeting, artist talks, etc. This is a shared responsibility, and typically looks like an event every 1-3 months in Edmonton.
How to Apply
Please fill out the submission Google Form or submit a brief statement (max 500 words) or a short video/audio submission (3 min) answering the following questions to board@latitude.org.
Why are you interested in joining the board;
What perspectives or skills would you bring;
Any preferred roles (if applicable).
All submissions will receive a confirmation of receipt once reviewed by a board member. Short-listed candidates will be contacted for a short interview. Successful candidates will be invited to a board meeting before the AGM for introductions and onboarding. Due to the incredible experience of the arts community in Edmonton, there may be more candidates than positions. We thank you in advance for your interest and appreciate your support!
