Francesca Carella Arfinengo (she/they) will host a part art workshop, part communal meal centered on the herb huacatay, an aromatic bitter plant used as a condiment in the Andes. Participants will get to know this plant through all the senses. Then, using pigments made with huacatay and other common ingredients in Andean cuisine, we will make experimental drawings to record this encounter. A communal meal will follow, where we will share dishes made with huacatay. The artist will lead a conversation around the table about how one’s identity is shaped and further understood through cooking and sharing food from our place of origin with our current community.
This event is geared at BIPOC participants whose identity has been shaped by the experience of immigration, either their own or their direct ancestors. Participants need to register below and state their dietary needs when doing so.
This event is made possible with the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts and of the Winnipeg Arts Council, with funding from the City of Winnipeg.
