Accessing the Space
Entering the Building
Latitude 53 is a single-level space, split into three galleries. There is one 3 inch tall step to enter the gallery, which is about the height of 2 golf balls. This step up runs all across the front of the building. We have a portable ramp for this step, which is put outside once the gallery opens. With our current COVID measures, we have been putting it out for drop-in days (Saturdays), but can easily be put outside when needed. If you’d like to confirm it will be outside for a weekday appointment, please include it as a note in your appointment booking.
The front door is 35 inches wide, which is wide enough to accommodate mobility devices such as a walker or standard-sized wheelchair. The front door is a pull door that swings outwards to the left.
To access the patio, the outdoor gate opening is 40 inches, whereas it is 35 inches through the standard door inside. The patio can also be accessed through the garage door, when it is open.
Transit & Parking
We can be found at 10242 106 St in Edmonton, which is located near bus routes 1, 2, 5, 52, 100, 111, and 560. We are also a few blocks away from the Corona LRT station, which is located south of us on the corner of Jasper Avenue and 107 St.
There are two parking stalls directly in front of the gallery. However, these spots can fill quickly - if you have mobility restrictions that would make these spots necessary for you, please contact us in advance of your visit to reserve a spot. There is paid street parking on 106 St, which becomes free after 6pm unless there is an event at Rogers Place on the same night. To see if there is an event at Rogers place, please check this website: https://isthereaneventatrogersplace.ca/. There is also a paid Impark lot directly behind our building - please keep in mind that to access the gallery from this parking lot, you can head towards Norquest (the building with the brown bricks and black glass panel roof, which will be to your right if you are facing the back of Latitude 53) and walk through their parking lot.
Engaging with the Space
There will always be seating available during regular hours in the gallery spaces. At this time, the primary seating options are folding chairs and short benches (no back support), and a selection of large, reinforced chairs.
At this time, we are not a fully fragrance-free space, but we do discourage visitors from wearing perfume or cologne.
If you are Blind/low-vision/a non-visual learner and would like visual descriptions for the pieces in the gallery, please talk to a staff member and they will assist you.
The gallery is free to visit, but donations are welcome. The front desk is just over 29 inches high, and you can find a member of staff there if you need any assistance or have any questions.
Washrooms
All washrooms are gender-neutral, with multiple stalls sharing a sink space, as well as a separate, physically accessible single-stall washroom.
Sinks are 34 inches off the ground in both the multi-stall and single-stall washrooms, but there is a larger lip to reach into the sink of the multi-stall washrooms.
The accessible washroom is a single-stall washroom to the left of the multi-stall washrooms. It has a flat door handle, meaning that the door can be opened without having to grip the handle. In the accessible washroom, the toilet seat is 17 inches high, and there are grab bars beside the toilet. The paper towel dispenser is 43 inches off the ground. Please note, there is also a sink - on the floor, in the back corner of the room - which is used to fill a mop bucket.
Kitchen
The kitchen has 2 doors side-by-side - one door opens to 36 inches, with both doors opening to about 72 inches total. The counter height inside the kitchen is 36 inches, with the countertop at the bar - how most guests would interact with the bar - being 44 inches high. We are currently working on a more accessible solution for the bar height.
Event Information
As the bar can be too high for many people, those working in the kitchen/bar space during events will come around to the front of the bar to offer assistance. The bar is mostly used for drinks. Latitude 53 is a licensed venue, meaning that alcohol will be present at events unless otherwise specified.
Oftentimes during events, there is also a regular table - about 30 inches tall - set out in front of the bar area that holds refreshments/snacks. We will endeavour to make public the refreshments/snacks being offered the day before each event through the event postings on Facebook and our website. A common snack we share at events is popcorn, popped in coconut oil. Please call us at 780 423 5353 if you need any clarification.
Office Spaces
Many of the internal doors in Latitude range between 30 and 35 inches in width. However, the office spaces (Front, Back, and Main - see Floorplan) should be physically accessible to enter. However, depending on the area needed to turn (which may vary with mobility devices), the Front Office and Back Office might be a tight squeeze/not allow adequate space to maneuver through those spaces.
