Schmoozy Artwork Pickup and DJ Set by Hood Joplin

Come pick up your Schmoozy artwork, and enjoy a live DJ set by Hood Joplin from 1-2:30pm!

Canadian DJ, producer and vocalist Hood Joplin (Sarah Ahmad) is pushing the envelope when it comes to producing blistering club beats. As a member of the Kudatah collective, her body of work is an enthralling mix of sounds that touches upon various elements of rap, footwork, jungle, futurepop and trap. In summer 2016, her debut EP #75FFA1 was independently released via Drama Hands, an Edmonton-based netlabel. In 2017, Joplin would follow up with the incendiary debut album HAZARD, released via Owake Records. In 2020, she teamed up with close collaborator Text Chunk to release the nine-track Bank Account (Moveltraxx), a collection of riotous tracks that refuse to let up upon first listen. The collaborative release picked up coverage from outlets like Hyponik and Complex, who named “Keepflowin’” as the unofficial anthem of the 2019 Dekmantel Festival where the song found a place in many DJ sets at the festival. Amid these projects, Hood Joplin has curated many DJ mixes for a variety of outlets including Thump, Purple Sneakers and Untitled #909, all the while contributing tracks to various compilations, served as a 2019 Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp alumni and a Serato Sample Challenge finalist.

Kev Liang Performance

Join us for a durational performance by recent BMO 1st ART! Alberta Winner Kev Liang on Oct 23 starting at 1:30pm.

"The four print pieces I have for Schmoozy are part of a conceptual body of work dealing with my diasporic 2nd-gen Chinese-Canadian identity, specifically within the context of being a queer/gay man in our fast-paced, contemporary, anthropocentric, labour-focused reality" -Kev

Stephanie Patsula Sympathetic Resonance Performance

Stephanie Patsula will perform Sympathetic Resonance, an embodied sound and movement assemblage. With the use of water filled glass instruments amplified by a hydrophone, and two contact microphones, Patsula uses the resonance of the room to create an immersive sound bath. The harmonic phenomenon of sympathetic vibration is achieved when a passive body responds to external vibrations in a similar harmonic range. By creating a live feedback loop with her body, instruments and the acoustics of the room, she creates improvisational soundscapes with the intention for vibrational reciprocity with the individuals, objects and architecture of the spaces she performs. The process of responding to sensations in her body to create an experience for others, opens up channels of emotional empathy and Patsula attempts to playfully engage with proximity to the audience.

Custom instruments designed by Stephanie Patsula and Glasswork fabricated by leah kudel.
