I meet Kathryn Williamson at the Second Cup at around 9AM, when the early morning work crowd still seems to be there. One of the first things she says is that the man sitting next to us with the laptop (wearing a black suit, but with a shaved head and tattoos) was specifically asked to be there as part of her project. I don't know if this is true or if she's making it up (knowing her interest in truth and fiction). I find myself relying on cues such as, have I seen this person before (in festival contexts such as these, you begin to quickly recognize who is involved and who isn't—perhaps ritualistic in itself: who's in and who's out?). Lance and Jessica show up later and we have a fairly frank conversation about our practices as artists. I'm finding that I'm getting to know everyone better, and that spaces created by this occasion further this process. Also, the conversations that take place in structured contexts continue in other, more informal contexts; the festival itself, because of its timeframe and the way it brings people together, seems to create a kind of larger, ongoing conversation.
